The growth of technology influenced the outcome of WWII in a huge way. It is very evident that nuclear bombs had the most significant impact on WWII. They introduced an entirely different "ball game." Before nuclear weapons were invented the playing field was somewhat even, each country had various guns, tanks, rockets, planes, etc. Ironically the nuclear weapons were the most effective tool in ending the war, due to the severity of damage. After the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor the Americans took the initiative to defend their own and responded with declaring war. The Manhattan project included some of the worlds greatest scientists who grouped together and created three nuclear bombs; Trinity, Little Boy and Fat Man. The USA president at the time decided to drop Little boy on Hiroshima and Fat Man on Nagasaki. Japan lost thousands of people due to these bombings and despite the fact that it is against their culture to surrender, they had to. The dropping of those atomic bombs changed the world forever. Since then not one nuclear bomb has been dropped becasue each country knows now what they are capable of. These weapons did not only effect the War, but the entire world.

In WW2 the Allies underwent many turning points. However, it is justifiable that the most significant turning point was the Battle of Stalingrad. Soviet had a HUGE confidence boost during this time period. The Germans were then vulnerable after 91, 000 Germans were taken prisoners. The allies forces strengthen when Germany was defeated and did not have the resources to fight against the Russians because of their lack of equipment. The soviets were inspired by their lack of equipment because it gave them a promising future to defeat the Germans. In the case of Germany winning this battle, they would have been able to take over Russia which would have made them much stronger than they already were. If they were not defeated they soon would have taken over all of Europe. The Battler of Stalingrad prevented this because it knocked down Germany and built up the Allies resulting in various other turning points following this battle. Therefor, the German defeat at Stalingrad was the most important turning point for the Allies in WWII. It ensured that the Allies were strong enough to fight back and help other countries gain back their power to fight off Germany.
The Phoney War's ending was the beginning of the German invasion. The Germans invaded Dunkirk with their new Blitzkreig, this caused 300,000 British soldiers to be trapped. Because of this, there was only one form transportation available to the them; merchant marine boats, fishing boats and pleasure boats. Over 700 of these non-official army boats provided transportation for troops to safety in Great Britain. This evacuation of the army saved approximately 338,226 soldiers. The allies perceived this as a victory. Churchill proudly exclaimed that "wars are not won on evacuations." That being the case, Churchill disregarded the fact that lives were saved and acknowledge the lack of combat. If one team does participate in the fight then it can not be justified as a victory. Winston envisioned defeat and winning is what he wanted his country to demonstrate.
Saving private Ryan was a film that involved war-time action during World War 2 and D-Day . The Allied invasion to liberate Europe is the backdrop to the main plot of film. The plot evolved around Tom Hanks’ character Captain Miller and his small unit of men as they are sent to rescue Private Ryan played by Matt Damon. Ryan was the remaining brother in his family left alive; others were murdered in combat. Captain Miller's mission was to find Private Ryan and return him home safely to his mother. This movie contributed to out knowledge about war significantly. It touched base on the horrifying, realistic tragedies of war, using WW2 to exploit the unfortunate daily lives of a soldier. This film also connected to the attitude people had about war figures. The men on the rescue team demonstrated heroic qualities nearing the end of film, for me that was an eye-opener. Patriotism literally motivates people to their death bed. |
